For Immediate Release:
February 2, 2001

NORWALK, CALIF- The Cerritos College Teacher TRAC program was recently given the “Outstanding Leadership Award.”  The program will receive the award on Friday, February 16, 2001 in Tampa, Florida at the Chair Academy’s 10th Annual International Conference.

The Chair Academy was created in 1989 to better prepare department chairs, deans, and other organizational leaders for the complex roles and responsibilities required of their positions, in response to needs seen at Maricopa County Community Colleges in Phoenix, Arizona, where the headquarters for the Academy are located today.  The Academy, which gives this award annually to similar programs throughout the country, chose Cerritos College as the Region One recipient.  Region One includes: California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Hawaii, and Guam.

There are five total regions recognized by the academy nationally.  Gary Filan, Executive Director of the Academy said the “team’s commitment to excellence in the academic and administrative area were formidable.”  Also saying “the team’s contributions to faculty, staff, and students demonstrated invaluable leadership traits.”

The Teacher TRAC program at Cerritos College includes a partnership with California State University Long Beach that affords students the opportunity to complete a Bachelor's degree and multi-subject teaching credential in four calendar years.  Once accepted into the program, students spend two years in the program at Cerritos, with an opening waiting for them in the Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) at CSULB.

The following is a list of team members going to Tampa to accept the award:  Teacher TRAC Director Sue Parsons, Teacher TRAC Co-Director Cheryl Shimazu, Teacher TRAC Service Learning Coordinator Geri Codd, Teacher TRAC Technology Faculty Mentor Kent Colbath, Teacher TRAC Technology Faculty Mentor Susan Butler, Teacher TRAC Academic Counselor Chris Sugiyama, Teacher TRAC Academic Counselor Gloria Montenegro-Bridges.
